Stoke Sub Hamdon
By car and by bus
From the A303 turn off for Crewkerne and Stoke sub Hamdon on the A356 then follow the brown signs to Ham Hill.
From the A3088 out of Yeovil turn left onto the road signposted Montacute and Stoke sub Hamdon (then right at the junction). Follow the road for approximately 2km/just over 1mile into Stoke sub Hamdon then follow the brown signs to Ham Hill.
The grid reference of Ham Hill is ST 478 168.
A public bus service operated by South West Coaches travels between Yeovil and South Petherton. The buses stop in the centre of Stoke sub Hamdon, which is the village at the foot of the hill. From there, Ham Hill is a short, 10 minute steep walk up Ham Hill Road - Ham Hill is signposted with a brown tourist sign.
Ham Hill Country Park is now more accessible for all than ever before. There are suitable walks and trails for all levels of walkers.
If you are looking for a relatively flat, well-surfaced, short route with mostly very level camber throughout, then the Northern Spur of the Country Park is the perfect place for a walk. It is easily negotiable for buggies, wheelchairs and those with limited mobility, and is very close to the main Ham Hill car park (there is a reserved disabled parking space outside the Ham Hill Centre).
There are many features of interest on the all ability route, including a modern-day stone circle, which is packed full of fossils and crystals, and old quarry workings that show exposed Hamstone faces. There are panoramic views across Somerset from the war memorial, and plenty of interesting plant species that attract a range of insects throughout the summer.
Hire our Off-road Scooter: The Tramper!
For people wanting to explore the countryside but have limited mobility, Ham Hill Country Park has an off-road scooter available for hire called a 'tramper'.
The Tramper is designed to travel over rugged terrain, and over long distances. Anyone over the age of 16 can hire the Tramper for free - all that is required is debit/credit card details for security. If you would like to hire the Tramper, please phone the Ham Hill Office on 01935 823617.
Before using the Tramper, one of the rangers will explain and show customers how to operate the vehicle, and there is a short familiarisation session to ensure operators are confident and competent. We require customers to sign a straightforward document to say they agree to the rules of hire.
Please be aware that the Tramper needs to be booked at least 48 hours in advance and is only available during the rangers’ key time of work, which is from Monday to Friday, 8.00am - 4.00pm.
A new leaflet is available to download, suitable for wheelchairs and pushchairs Ham Hill Easy Access Trail designed by Nathan Gardiner from Shopmobility.
